Rewarding year for LADS. Launceston Amateur Dramatic Society held their AGM for the year ending 30th June on the 29th July at the Eagle House Hotel. Chairperson Margaret Parker reported on a very successful and rewarding year. She stated: “it has been an exceptionally busy year for the Society, without a break they had put on three major productions – Round and Round the Garden in October, Our Day Out in January, Allo Allo in May and finishing the year with a spectacular evening event Aspects of Youth by the Youth Sections in June”. In paying tribute to Alan Pollard for his energy and enthusiasm for Directing these plays she was also aware of the time and effort given in running the weekly programme for the Youth Theatre Group.
Liz Eagle gave a short presentation on the activities of Starting Stars (7-11 years) and Alan Pollard the Youth Theatre Group (12-18 years), both groups having many talented members and eager to learn to take part in challenging parts and producing their own material. Mrs Parker also welcomed a number of new faces to the Society during the year, stating “this is strengthening the Society’s adult section with new actors and backstage skills, providing us with new opportunities to take on more new exciting productions”. The report covered the society’s programme for 2005 and 2006 including the bi-annual pantomime –Robinson Crusoe & The Pirates in January (auditions and rehearsal starting in September), Tons of Money in May and the entry of the All England One Act Festival Plays for the Youth Theatre Group starting with the regional rounds in April. Regular weekly play readings are also planned, as well as workshops to help understand and improve on various theatre skills. Mrs Parker gave detailed information on the grant received from Awards for All for the replacement of ageing equipment and the Local Network Fund for helping to support the youth groups to put on events, expand tuition and workshops, entry for the All England Play festival and materials. Alan Minett, Treasurer reported on the years finance giving details of income and expenditure and emphasising the need to plan and budget well as been done in the last two years. A resolution to increase annual subscription fees was made for the year 2005. Mrs Parker completed the reporting thanking the Officers and Committee for all their valuable support and to David Shrimpton who was vacating the post of secretary, a very special thanks for his drive and commitment. Finally, she expressed her thanks to the local businesses that have supported the Society through sponsorship and made it possible cover part of the running costs and extended activities within the Society and youth activities. The appointment of Officers and Committee concluded the proceeding and was followed by a buffet.

The evening ended with two presentations- Joan Blackmore award to Kate Hancock for her outstanding work in the year and a Life Time Achievement award to Alan Preston for his contribution over four decades to set design and construction winning many Best Set awards for the Launceston Society at the Cornwall Drama Association.
